Two James Bond franchise actors join the cast of Steven Soderbergh’s new spy thriller, Black Bag. Soderbergh is best known as the director of the Ocean‘s trilogy, though he’s also received Academy Award nominations for writing 1989’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape and directing both Erin Brockovich and Traffic in 2001, winning for the latter. Soderbergh’s next film is a spy thriller written by David Keopp, though plot details are being kept under wraps. The cast is already set to include Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Regé Jean Page, and Marisa Abela.
Now, two James Bond franchise actors have joined the cast of Soderbergh’s spy thriller. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Bag has cast Naomie Harris, Pierce Brosnan, and Tom Burke. Harris is known for playing Moneypenny in Daniel Craig’s James Bond movies, while Brosnan played Bond in four films from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Black Bag
begins production in May.
Is Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag Inspired By James Bond?
A fan of the James Bond franchise, Soderbergh was once in talks with one of the franchise’s producers, Barbara Broccoli, about directing a Bond movie. However, late in the negotiation process, there were some irreconcilable differences between the two sides that caused the talks to collapse. Though he never got to make a Bond movie, Soderberg’s love of the spy franchise has permeated some of his own work, including the 2011 action-thriller Haywire, which also starred Michael Fassbender.
Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked From Worst to Best
From Ocean’s Eleven and Erin Brockovich to his latest film, No Sudden Move, here are all 32 of Steven Soderbergh’s films from worst to best.
With Soderbergh’s next film being described as a spy thriller, coupled with it casting two alumni from the franchise, it’s very likely that Black Bag will continue to be influenced by Soderbergh’s love of Bond. David Keopp, the screenwriter behind Black Bag, is also no stranger to the spy thriller genre, having co-written 1996’s Mission: Impossible and 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Though details about Black Bag remain sparse, it sure seems like Soderbergh’s spy thriller will be heavily inspired by Bond.
